John Adams, 2nd president of the US wrote: “I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy”, and they in turn must study those subjects so that their children can study “painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry and porcelain” (John Adams to Abigail Adams, 12 May 1780)
