In the economy some exchanges occur in the marketplace but others within the branches or divisions of a corporation, and these are not open to market competition but rather are dictated by corporate structure. The economy is partitioned into markets and hierarchies, a similar polarity. Cooperation and competition, opportunism, like centripetal and centrifugal forces, go together and live in rhythmic balance. That rhythm and balance of markets and hierarchies constitute a structure, like a vortex, within the flow of the economy. They form society’s structure. Government, like all organizations, bureaucracies and other such institutions are such vortices, stable to a point but changeable.
