Joyce, Ulysses, Nestor (i.e. insufficient wisdom), in the form of Stephen’s Headmaster at school, utters the Victorian platitude that “history moves toward one great goal, the manifestation of God” (2.381).  However, “God to Stephen is not the final term in a process but rather a ‘shout in the street,’ some totally unexpected and unforeseeable manifestation” (Epstein 22)
